Thirty-five years after Michael Caine played the role of crass boy-toy Milo Tindle in Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s screen adaptation of Anthony Shaffer’s hit play Sleuth, the actor takes over his 1972 co-star Laurence Olivier’s role of rich cuckold Andrew Wyke in Kenneth Branagh’s updated remake of the same story. Where Olivier brought a seething, upper-class disgust to mystery-novelist Wyke’s attitude toward Tindle–who is having an affair with the former’s wife and has come to the writer’s mansion to requst that Wyke divorce her–Caine basks in the comic absurdity of a superficial man like Tindle (Jude Law) led by the nose into one or another illusion of happiness. The new film’s script by Harold Pinter has the arid air of expectation familiar to his work, the weight of things not said whenever someone speaks. That’s a considerable weight indeed, in Sleuth’s story of a psychological contest between two very different men who despise one another beneath outward civility.
The story finds Tindle arriving at Wyke’s home. Following various small humiliations, he is invited by the older man to steal his wife’s jewels in a scheme that benefits everyone. There’s more than meets the eye to Wyke’s proposal, however, leading to unexpected developments and surprises in the film’s second half. Branagh’s direction is suitably cool and sleek in the beginning, when the characters’ emotions are still in check and the oddness of Wyke’s gadget-filled world is still entertaining to behold. (The film’s set design is one of its strongest elements.) But once voices rise and threats appear and the like, Branagh can’t seem to penetrate the surface of things. Unlike Mankiewicz’s take, the new version is caught up in the insularity of the characters’ tit-for-tat gamesmanship, lacking the intriguing, class-warfare subtext of the earlier work. A gay angle thrown into the last half-hour sits uncomfortably and irrelevantly with the rest of the material. The best thing about this Sleuth are the performances of Law and Caine, who could have been even better with a great script. –Tom Keogh

The surviving members of the Doors did a savvy thing with this hourlong session of VH-1 Storytellers, first broadcast in early 2001. Knowing that they could never replace their late and legendary frontman, Jim Morrison, the Doors (Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, and John Densmore) invited vocalists from a variety of hot bands to offer their own interpretations of eight classic Doors hits. The spectre of Morrison looms over the entire set, reminding us that the charismatic, leather-clad Lizard King could never, ever be matched in terms of vocal style, depth, and heart-rending soul. It’s best, then, to let these admiring young rockers enjoy this opportunity to pay reverent homage, and they do it with considerable skill. Above it all, the remaining Doors form a solid trio, still lighting fire to songs they’ve performed thousands of times.
Patrick Monahan (from Train) kicks off with a sharp rendition of “Love Me Two Times,” and the Cult’s Ian Astbury tries (almost successfully) to bring a medley of “Whiskey Bar/Backdoor Man” up to Morrison’s level. The highlight comes from Days of the New’s Travis Meeks, whose performance of “The End” is fresh, impassioned, and altogether triumphant. Nearly as good is Stone Temple Pilots’ Scott Weiland (clearly a Morrison worshipper), who burns through “Break On Through” and “Five to One” with adequate fervor. Creed’s Scott Stapp closes with “Light My Fire” (proving that the original is still untouchable) and a rafter-rattling “Roadhouse Blus.” Each performance is noteworthy, and die-hard Doors fans shouldn’t miss this latter-day celebration. Younger listeners who are less aware of Morrison’s legacy are best served, in the long run; they get the best of both worlds, old and new. –Jeff Shannon

Based on the riveting bestseller by Richard Price, this 1995 crime drama was directed by Spike Lee with such authority and authenticity that it has the hyper-real quality of a stylized documentary. Fully capturing the thoroughly researched detail of Price’s novel, the film focuses on Strike (newcomer Mekhi Phifer), a young, ambitious “clocker”–or drug dealer–who works the streets of his New York housing project, selling drugs for a local supplier named Rodney (played with ferocious charisma by Delroy Lindo). Just as Strike is struggling to get away from his dead-end life of crime, another dealer is murdered in a fast-food restaurant and local detectives (Harvey Keitel, John Turturro) consider Strike the primary suspect. In cowriting the script with novelist Price, Lee uses this murder mystery to explore the plagu of guns and black-on-black crime in America’s inner cities, in which drugs and death are familiar routines of daily life. The film doesn’t pretend to offer solutions, nor does it dwell on the problem with numbing insistence. Rather, this taut, well-acted film takes the viewer into a world often hidden in plain sight–a world where options seem nonexistent for youth conditioned to have little or no expectation beyond a probable early death. Lee and Price are deadly serious in handling this volatile subject (which incorporates racism, powerless law enforcement, and political indifference), but Clockers is also blessed with humor, insight, and humanity. It’s one of Lee’s most confidently directed films, signaling a creative maturity that Lee continud to develop throughout the 1990s. –Jeff Shannon

Humphrey Bogart is in familiar territory as an American expatriate in the Middle East, selling arms to the Syrian rebels under the nose of the occupying French army in 1925 Damascus. Bogie’s Harry Smith, dressed in a modest cream suit and natty bow tie, is a hustler in a shady world of brittle alliances where the sound of mortar and gunfire never lets up. His nemesis is incorruptible French officer Lee J. Cobb, who is no gentleman when it comes to his lady (Marta Toren), a European beauty who catches Smith’s eye. This mercenary, unsentimental Casablanca knock-off is dominated completely by a Bogart who has kissed romance and redemption goodbye. His ruthless, increasingly desperate performance makes up for the chilly Toren and the generally bland supporting cast (the exception is the animated Zero Mostel), and lights a fire under the film. –Sean Axmaker
